Junior Rowing Program 2017-09-11T20:27:24+00:00

Our junior competitive rowing program begins its season each year in August and is comprised of students from around the Sacramento area ranging in age 13 yrs – 18 yrs in high school. Our program has four squads: a Men’s and Women’s Varsity team and a Men’s and Women’s Novice team.

Athletes on the novice teams are in their first year of rowing and dedicate their season to learning how to row and compete in the sport. Occasionally, novice athletes may also compete with the varsity teams depending on their skill and development throughout the season. Novices compete against other junior crews in our region and end their season at the Southwest Junior Regional Championships in May.

Athletes on the varsity teams have completed their first year of rowing and focus each season on excelling within our region, and working hard to qualify for and compete in the national championship regatta. Varsity boats compete at the Southwest Junior Regional Championships in May to qualify for the United States Junior Rowing National Championships in June.

Our program is focused on teaching UNRC’s athletes to dedicate themselves to being successful students and athletes, the importance of working hard to achieve ambitious individual and team goals, and the value in being a great teammate and having good sportsmanship.

Our fall season begins on the second Monday in August and continues through December. Our spring season begins in January and continues until May.  Practices are Monday through Friday 3:30 – 6:00 pm. Download, print and bring the membership packet below with you on the first day.

Program Successes

In our short seven-year history, UNRC’s program has qualified boats to the U.S. Junior Rowing National Championships in three of its seasons. Several of our athletes have been recruited to be a rower or coxswain at successful crew programs throughout the country, such as those at the University of California at Berkeley, Stanford University, University of Washington, California State University at Sacramento, Duke University, Princeton University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
